Jon Newton has always been a coach who gets the most out of his Webster County teams when they take to the floor. This year, the veteran Trojan coach is asking for more out of his squad.

The Trojans feel like they have the right mix of talent and experience returning to compete for a championship in what coaches call a balanced Sixth District.

The first thing Newton has worked to adjust over the summer and fall is something the players can control.

“I thought our effort has been very inconsistent the past few seasons, so first thing that will stand out this season is the effort and energy that our team plays with,” Newton said. “Through our first 25 practices this year, the energy has been great during practice. It helps when you have 11 upperclassmen to lead practice each day.”

One of the upperclassmen expected to lead the way is senior Tyler Camplin, who averaged 17.7 points and went to the free throw line 206 times. He made 70-percent of his foul shots and 48-percent of his shots from the field.

6-2 senior Ayden Winn (5.4 ppg., 4.2 rpg.) and 6-3 junior Destin Allen (7.9 ppg., 4.6 rpg.) teams with 6-4 junior Hunter McNaughton (12.6 ppg., 4.1 rpg.) to give the Trojans some size inside and some offensive accuracy. The trio combined to shoot 54-percent from the field in leading the Trojans to a 16-14 record. As a team, Webster shot 50-percent from the field and 32-percent from 3-point range.

“Two weaknesses the past few seasons have been our intensity on defense as well as sharing the ball on offense,” Newton said. “Both areas have been stressed in early season workouts as well as practices.”

Newton said sophomore Aaron Harmon and freshman Bradin Nelson will see plenty of time in the backcourt early in the season

With no clear favorite in the Sixth District, don’t be surprised if Webster County muscles their way back into the title game and their sixth region tourney appearance in nine seasons with Newton as head coach.
