Lady Colonels Fight Past Hopkinsville in 8th District Battle

The Christian County Lady Colonels got key baskets and key defensive stops in the waning moments of the game to pick up a tough 53-46 win over the Hoptown Lady Tigers in an 8th District battle Friday night at Tiger Gym. Christian County scored the first two points of the game on a pair of free throws and did not trail for the rest of the night.

The game was tight throughout the first half of play. In the opening quarter, the game was tied twice, at 2-2 and 7-7. The quarter would end with the Lady Colonels holding a 14-11 lead. Lamontavia Forte and Destinee Catlett-Watkins had big starts for Christian County, with each scoring five points in the opening quarter. Donisha Flowers paced Hoptown with five points in the quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same, a tight, physical game, with made baskets coming at a premium. The game stayed close throughout, however, Christian County never lost the lead or had the Lady Tigers pull even in the second eight minutes, as the half ended with the Lady Colonels up 24-21. Eniya McGee had a strong half for Christian County, with ten points. Hoptown’s Donisha Flowers finished the half with 9 points.

Both teams had problems with turnovers in the opening half, with Christian County coughing the ball up 12 times, and Hopkinsville giving it up 8 times. One of the big stories of the opening half was the interior defense of Christian County, as the Lady Colonels finished the half with seven blocked shots.

Midway through the third quarter, it appeared the Lady Colonels were about to put the game away. After a pair of threes from Mikayah Killebrew and a basket from Reni Shemwell, the Lady Colonels pushed their lead out to ten points at 37-27. The Lady Tigers would fight back and trim the lead to 39-34 when the quarter came to an end.

Hopkinsville would make one last big push to try and get to the lead in the opening moments of the 4th quarter. The Lady Tigers would get as close as two points at 42-40 and 44-42, but could never draw even or get to the front. A basket from Eniya McGee and two free throws from Mikayah Killebrew pushed the lead out to 48-42. Hoptown would get no closer than four points over the final moments of the game, as the Lady Colonels held on for their 7th straight win in the series.

Eniya McGee led the way for Christian County, finishing with 15 points in the contest. Destinee Catlett-Watkins was the other Lady Colonel to reach double figures with 11 points. Mikayah Killebrew and Lamontavia Forte added 8 points each.

A big night for Hopkinsville’s Donisha Flowers. Flowers led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Jakayla Epps and Lakayla Samuel also reached double figures for the Lady Tigers with 10 points each.

Christian County was able to pick up the win despite committing 23 turnovers. Hopkinsville finished with sixteen turnovers in the contest.
