Short-Handed Lady Lyons Fade Late at Whitesville Trinity

12-20-butler

Lyon County opened play Thursday in the Dental Designs of Owensboro Christmas Classic with a 59-52 road loss at host Whitesville Trinity.

The Lady Lyons hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and built a 21-12 lead after one quarter.  They led 36-29 at halftime, but Trinity began the second half on an 11-0 run to grab a four-point lead.

The game stayed closed until Lyon went cold from the field, and Trinity compounded that with an 8-0 run to go up by double-digits.

As many Second Region teams find out when they head east to the Third Region, free throws will be scarce for the visitors.  Whitesville Trinity hit 25-of-33 at the free throw line.  Lyon County was 4-of-7.

Rose Smith had a big night for the Lady Lyons with 23 points.  Gracen Wynn and Calista Collins each scored 11 points.

Lyon County played without two starters in the game.  Cathryn Brown, the team’s leading scorer, was with her family and brother Cullan Brown, who underwent surgery in Nashville Thursday related to the bone cancer that has put his college golf career on hold.  Ella Defew injured her foot in Tuesday’s loss to Trigg County and did not play.

Josie Aull and Cassidy Morris each scored 22 points to lead Whitesville Trinity (4-4).

Lyon County (1-6) will continue play in the event Friday when they face Cumberland County, who lost to Trinity 62-48 earlier in the day.
