Caldwell County held its annual football awards ceremony Sunday afternoon in the cafeteria at the high school.

The Tigers went 8-3 this past season under interim head coach Waynee McGowan. Will Barnes has been named the new head coach at Caldwell, replacing his father, the late David Barnes.

David Barnes was remembered at the banquet along with two players who would have been seniors this season, but died during their freshman school year – Avery Warfield and DeAryn Hamilton.

The Tigers did not give out any individual awards, but did hand out some scholarships. The Avery Warfield Memorial Scholarship went to Luke Stallins. The David Barnes Memorial Scholarship was given to Stallins and Ben Holt.

In addition, McGowan presented a football to Will Barnes recognizing David Barnes, at least unofficially, as the school’s all-time winningest coach. Pat Gates and Fred Clayton each won 117 games at Caldwell. Barnes, who died in August before the regular-season began, would have had 118 wins, counting the 2019 season.

Your Sports Edge was there for the Caldwell football banquet and got these shots from the ceremony.
