Led By Pair of Champs, Hoptown Places Third at Fort Knox

Hopkinsville had two wrestlers claim first place as the Tigers finished third Saturday at the Fort Knox Invitational.

Zlatko Skuljan entered the day ranked ninth in the 160-pound weight class.  He defeated Apollo’s Cameron Baker, the state’s 12th ranked wrestler, by fall to win first place in the division.

Denarius Barnes also won all of his matches to claim first place in 220-pound cass.  He defeated Trigg County’s Andrew Hendricks by fall to claim the title.

Kevonni Young entered the day ranked 15th statewide in the 152-pound weight class.  He lost to Paducah Tilghman’s David Conner, ranked third in the state, by technical fall in his first match and then battled back to win four straight matches to claim third place.

Trushaun Matt took third place in the 106-pound class.  He defeated Xavier Garcia of Fort Knox, ranked 18th in the state, by pin after advancing through the consolation semifinal.

Ronald McGee also finished in third place in the 132-pound class, defeating Apollo’s David Gerkin by a 9-5 decision in the third place match.

Holden Schneider (113) and Jacob Frederick (138) both won two matches in their respective weight classes but did not place.

As a team, Hopkinsville totaled 118.5 points to finish behind only Lafayette (208.5) and Caldwell County (122.5) in the 14-team field.
