It was Senior Night in Elkton, with the Todd County Central boys’ basketball team hosting Barren County as part of a boy/girl doubleheader on Saturday. However, the Trojans did their best to spoil the procedings, using a decided size advantage to muscle past the Rebels 73-49.
Todd County fell behind 6-0 early on, but after a layup by Preston Moore they pulled within 3 at 10-7 midway through the first quarter. Aden Nyekan powered his way to 11 points for the Trojans, and they led 19-9 with 1:24 left in the first. After a timeout, the Rebels closed the quarter on a 5-0 run with Austin Rager connecting on a 3-pointer followed by another Moore layup.
The Rebels only managed 8 second-quarter points, with Deonte Toliver accounting for 6, while Nyekan and Jacob Shaw combined for 11 to help the Trojans to an 18-point advantage. Toliver closed the half with a corner 3 for a 37-22 score.
After Moore scored on a jumper in the lane to open the second half, Barren County responded with a 7-0 run to build a 20-point cushion, capped by a corner 3 from Jacob Shaw. Todd County punched back, with Dominique Morrow scoring 5 points during a 9-2 spurt that trimmed the margin to 13 after a Moore layup with 3:20 left in the third. But that would be as close as the Rebels would get, and they trailed 53-35 going to the fourth quarter.
Todd County got 5 more points from Morrow in the fourth, but Caleb Hester and Ryan Shirley put up 5 each to help the Trojans pick up their second-consecutive win and ninth in ten outings.
