Falcons’ Avila Earns Return Trip to Wrestling State Tourney

Jesus Avila’s 4th-place finish highlighted the Fort Campbell wrestling team’s day at the Region 1 wrestling tournament on Saturday at Trigg County High School.  Eleven Falcon wrestlers combined for 28 points, leaving the team in 11th place.

Avila (24-10) will make a second-consecutive trip to next week’s state tournament after earning a 4th-place finish at 195 lbs., beginning with a first round bye in the quarterfinals on Saturday.  He dropped his next match by tiebreaker to Union County’s Corithian Seales-Portee, but bounced back with a 2-1 decison over Ohio County’s Gillam Nicodemus in the consolation semifinals.  Avila then lost a hard-fought 3rd-place match 2-1 in sudden victory to Christian County’s AJ Harvey.

Garrett Furnas (21-16) dropped his opener by fall to Hopkinsville’s Trushaun Matt, before receiving a bye in the first consolation round on the way to a 5th-place finish.  He suffered a consolation semifinal loss by fall to McCracken County’s Hunter Hawthorne, before claiming the 5th spot with a victory by fall over Henderson County’s Andrew Galbraith.

Landon Rhodd (15-20) bounced back from an opening-round loss to Christian County’s Ethan Wells at 126, winning by fall over Henderson County’s Jermaine Poynter Jr. in the first consolation round.  Rhodd dropped the consolation semifinal matchup with Ohio County’s Gunnar Arnold, but took the 5th-6th place match over Hopkinsville’s Jonathan Quincey by fall in only :31.

Brock Sharp finished 2-2 at 113, with John Montalvo going 1-2 at 120. Thatcher Balfour picked up a bye at 132, Scott Bricker went 2-2 at 145, and Jack Cogbill was 2-2 at 152.
