After missing out on the state wrestling tournament last year, Hopkinsville senior Zlatko Skuljan punched his return ticket with a 2nd-place showing at Saturday’s Region 1 tournament, while helping the Tigers to 96.5 points and a 6th-place team finish.

Skuljan got a bye in the 160 lb. opener, before a win by fall over Paducah Tilghman’s Cameron Sabbs in the quarterfinals.  A 4-1 semifinal decison over Christian County’s Neal Aldridge sent Skuljan into the final, but Dalton Russelburg proved too much in a 9-5 decision loss.

Trushaun Matt earned a 3rd-place finish at 106 lbs., picking up a win by fall over Fort Campbell’s Garrett Furnas, before a semifinal loss to Caldwell’s Collin Teutsch put him in the consolations.  A win by fall over Henderson County’s Andrew Galbraith set up a 3rd-place match with McCracken County’s Hunter Hawthorne.  Matt earned a win by fall in just :30 to build momentum toward the state tourney.

The Tigers’ Red Barnes (12-5) got off to a strong start at 220 with a win by fall over Fort Campbell’s Jarrett Barker, but Christian County’s Nico Bussell proved too much in the semifinal.  Barnes got back on track with a victory over Caldwell County’s Preston Rogers, before dispatching Trigg County’s Andrew Hendricks by a 9-3 decision in the 3rd-place match.

Kevonni Young was the next-highest Tiger finisher, taking 4th-place at 152.  He won his first two matches, by fall over Trigg County’s Anthony Hall and a 17-4 decision over Christian County’s Caleb Anderson, before a semifinal loss to Paducah Tilghman’s David Conner sent him to the consolations.  A technical fall victory over Ohio County’s Zander Bunch pushed Young into the 3rd-place match, but he was forced to forfeit due to an injury.

Holden Schneider picked up a bye at 113, while Malaki Graves went 2-2 at 120.  Jonathan Quincey was 1-3 at 126, Ronald McGee was 4-2 at 132, and Dontre Quarles went 1-3 at 285.
