It’s often been said that good defense leads to good offense. That turned out to be the case Tuesday night as the Christian County Colonels hit the road to Union County and came away with a solid 74-43 win over the Braves.

The Colonels came out firing on all cylinders from the get go. Christian County used a 10-0 first quarter run to get to a double digit lead, and the Colonels would be up by seven at 20-13 as the opening quarter came to an end.

Christian County then essentially took the Braves out of the contest with a 12-2 run to open the second quarter and go up 32-15. By the end of the quarter, continuing to be led by their defensive effort, the Colonels had moved the lead out to 20 points at 47-27. Mikeon Mathis and Stephen Bussell both had big halves for Christian County, Mathis with 13 points and Bussell with 11.

The third quarter saw more of the same for Christian County. The Colonel defense limited the Braves to just six points, while the offense was able to extend the lead out to 61-33 by quarter’s end.

Union County was able to play a bit more even with the Colonels in the final quarter, but by that point, the issue had long been decided, as Christian County rode it on out to the 31 point win.

Mikeon Mathis scored 22 points for Christian County, including 8 of 8 at the free throw line. Stephen Bussell chipped in with 20 points for the Colonels. Bubba Leavell also got to double figures with 14, including four made 3-pointers.

Union County was led by Keishon Martin and Kaleb Kanipe with 12 points each.

Christian County wraps up the regular season at 10-18 with the win. The Colonels begin the postseason next Tuesday night, when they take on crosstown rival Hopkinsville in a semifinal game of the boys 8th District tournament at Christian County High School.
