Trigg County’s 1985 District Title Team Recognized

Ray Maggard’s final basketball team at Trigg County was recognized Thursday on the 35th anniversary of their improbable district title.

The 1984-85 team began the season with seven straight losses and saw two starters leave the team at Christmas.  Trigg County’s record stood at 2-13 before a road win at Caldwell County.  The next game saw the Wildcats lose to Hopkinsville 83-77 at Wildcat Gym.  The Tigers would go on to win the state championship.

Trigg County beat Livingston Central and Crittenden County to win the district title.  Their season ended with an 8-16 record and a loss to West Hopkins 71-70 in the first round of the region tournament.

Ray Maggard would leave Trigg County after the season and take the Daviess County coaching position.

Leading scorers on the team were Tommy Cassity (13.2), Kim Mayes (12.9), Tony Baker (10.7), Tracey Baker (6.3), and David Sumner (5.6).

Team members in the attendance were Head Coach Ray Maggard, Assistant Coach Mike Wright, Tony Baker, John Humphries, David Sumner, Tommy Cassity, Kim Mayes, and Chris Radford.

Other team members were assistant coach Rick Larson, Tracey Baker, Stan Humphries, Steven Sanders, and Scott Sivills.
