Tournament time across the Bluesgrass has arrived, with the beginning of district tournament action across the state Monday evening. The question going into 8th District girls’ tournament Monday night is whether or not anything can prevent Hopkinsville and Christian County from reaching Wednesday night’s championship game. The tournament gets underway at 6:00pm Monday at Christian County High School.

The first game Monday night will have top seeded Hopkinsville (13-15) taking on #4 seed Fort Campbell (0-23). The two teams met twice during the regular season, and neither was a competitive situation. Back on December 11, the Lady Tigers went down to post and came away with a 75-11 win. Lakayla Samuel led three Lady Tigers in double figures that night with 20 points.

The return match at Hopkinsville High School took place January 3. The result was much the same as the first time the two teams met, as the Lady Tigers walked off with a 57-12 win. Samuel again was the leading scorer in the game with 22 points.

Hoptown is lead by Donisha Flowers, who is averaging 14.1 ppg. Flowers is also averaging 10.4 rebounds per contest. Lakayla Samuel is close behind at 12.9 points a game for the Lady Tigers, and 9.1 rebounds.

Asia Cabili leads Fort Campbell in scoring at 5.3 points a game. Marissa Cole is next at 3.6ppg. Fort Campbell’s leading healthy rebounder is Cabili at 4.9 rebounds per contest.

The second game Monday night will find #2 seed Christian County (11-16) taking on third seeded University Heights (7-19). The first matchup between the two, back on January 28, saws Christian County come away with a 68-38 win. Mikayah Killebrew led three Lady Colonels in double figures that night with 16 points.

The two teams met again on February 4. The Lady Colonels picked up a 51-26 road win at Blazer Gym. Peri Brown was one of two Lady Colonels in double figures in the game with 13 points.

Christian County is led by Eniya McGee, who is averaging 9.6 points per game. Reni Shemwell averages 7.2ppg. On the boards, the Lady Colonels are led by Reni Shemwell with 5.4 boards per contest. Christian County will be without leading scorer Trinity McGee, who suffered a knee injury earlier in the season.

For the Lady Blazers, Lily Hendricks is the leading scorer at 12.8 points per game. Meghan Adams is just below double figures at 9.8 points per game. On the boards, Meghan Adams heads up the Lady Blazers at 4.3 rebounds a game.

The two winners from Monday night will play Wednesday evening in the girls 8th District championship game at Christian County High School. Both the winner and runner-up advance on to the girls’ 2nd Region tournament, which will also be played at Christian County High School.
