Lyons Repeat as 5th District Champions

There was no Lyon County scoring blitz like in their semifinal win Tuesday. Instead, the Lyons hit 56-percent from the field in the second half to steadily pull away from Crittenden County and claim a 78-65 win for their second straight district title.

Both teams went back and forth in a first quarter that featured four ties and four lead changes.  Travis Perry scored the final three points of the quarter for a 19-18 Lyon County lead.  The Lyons would never trail again.

Gunnar Bingham scored eight points during a 12-4 Lyon run that put some space between them and the Rockets for a 34-26 lead.  The Lyons led by eight at halftime.

Back-to-back buckets by Preston Turley midway through the second quarter saw Crittenden trim the Lyon lead to 44-39, but they would get no closer.  The Lyons used a 10-1 run to essentially put the game away.  Crittenden got the deficit into single digits just one more time in the game.

Lyon County sophomore Jackson Shoulders, who had 32 points and 13 rebounds in the semifinal win over Livingston Central, followed up with 28 points and 11 rebounds Friday.  Perry scored 22 points, and Bingham added 13 points.

Turley led Crittenden County with 18 point and 14 rebounds.  Eric O’Leary added 16 points.

Both teams move into next week’s region tournament at Hopkinsville High.

The district title is the 20th for Lyon County – one behind Trigg County for the most in the Fifth District.  It was the third straight year Lyon and Crittenden met for the district title with Lyon winning two of those.
