For a half the Christian County Lady Colonels had the Webster County Lady Trojans where they wanted them. A physical game, with hard played defense and shots difficult to come by. However, turnovers and struggling to find the basket in the second half would ultimately be the undoing of the Lady Colonels Monday night.

Webster County used a 17-0 run over the end of the 2nd quarter and the beginning of the 3rd quarter to blow open a close game and pull away to a 62-39 win in the quarterfinal round of the Girls’ 2nd Region Tournament. The game marked the 4th year in a row that Webster County ended the Lady Colonels’ season in regional tournament play.

The game was a hard fought, physical battle from the very beginning, as the Lady Colonels came out determined on the defensive end to make the Lady Trojans earn every single point. While Christian County was battling on defense, they struggled to get the ball in the basket early. After a game opening basket by the Lady Colonels’ Mikayah Killebrew, Webster County ripped off an 8-0 run to go up 8-2. Christian County battled back and trimmed the lead to 9-6 after the opening quarter.

The Lady Colonels opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to go back in front at 13-11. Christian County, behind strong inside play, both on the board and defensively from Reni Shemwell and Treliyah Thomas, moved out to their biggest lead of the opening half at 25-21. The pair combined for 13 first half rebounds, and made penetrating to the basket very difficult for the Webster County guards. The duo also had at least four blocks during the opening half of play.

Webster County made a late run to get back to the lead at the end of the half. The Lady Trojans finished the second quarter on a mini 5-0 run to take a 26-25 lead at the break. Turnovers for Christian County and free throws for Webster County were the story of the opening half. Christian County committed 15 turnovers, while Webster County went 13 of 17 at the charity stripe. Christian County only went to the line two times in the first half, making both.

The run that Webster County finished the opening half with continued to open the second half of play. The Lady Trojans cranked up the defensive heat and took the Lady Colonels out of any kind of offensive flow to open the second half. Webster County opened the 3rd quarter with the first 12 points to complete a 17-0 run and take a 38-25 lead.

The offensive woes continued through the entire third quarter for Christian County. Webster County would hold the Lady Colonels without a field goal for the entire 8 minutes as the lead grew to 45-28 by the end of the quarter.

From that point on it was just a matter of the final score, as Webster County cruised on out to the 23 point win.

Marissa Austin led the Lady Trojans with 23 points, 15 of those coming at the free throw line. Raigan Price finished with a double-double at 17 points and 10 rebounds. Dezeray Browder finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

For Christian County, Mikayah Killebrew was the only player to reach double figures with 10 points. Amari Brown added nine points. Reni Shemwell finished with six points and seven rebounds. Treliyah Thomas had only two points, but did grab 10 rebounds in the game.

With the win, Webster County improves to 17-10 on the season and will advance to Friday night’s first semifinal, where they will take on Madsionville, who defeated the Lady Trojans earlier in the season.

Christian County sees their season come to an end with a record of 12-18. The Lady Colonels finished as runners-up in the 8th District tournament.
