PREVIEW – Christian County vs Crittenden County (Boys 2nd Region Tournament)

The Boys 2nd Region Tournament begins play Wednesday night at Hopkinsville High School. The opening matchup of the evening features the Christian County Colonels, champions out of the 8th District, against the Crittenden County Rockets, the runners-up out of the 5th District.

Christian County enters the tournament with a record of 12-18, but that record is deceptive. The Colonels have been dealing with injuries and illness most of the season, and have just started getting most of their players back over the final couple of weeks of the season. Additionally, of the 18 losses, 10 of those were by seven points or less. Christian County is coming off an 81-59 win over University Heights in the 8th District championship game.

The Colonels are led by Stephen Bussell at 14.2 points per game. The only other Colonel averaging in double figures is Mikeon Mathis at 12.4. Olajuwon White is just below the double figures mark at 9.7 points per contest. Qua Chambers, who has played in only 17 of Christian County’s games this season, comes in averaging 8.2 points.

On the boards, Olajuwon White leads Christian County at 6.7 boards per contest. Stephen Bussell is next at 4.6 rebounds per game.

The Colonels come into the tournament shooting 41.3-percent from the field, and 31.7-percent from behind the 3-point line. Christian County averages 25.9 rebounds per game.

Crittenden County enters the game with a record of 16-16. The Rockets are coming off a 78-65 loss to Lyon County in the 5th District championship game. Crittenden County has won 5 of its last 8 games.

The Rockets are led by Gabe Mott, who is averaging 16 points per game. Right behind him is Eric O’
Leary with 15.2 points a game. Preston Turley is also avering in double figures at 14.2 points an outing.

On the boards, Preston Turley has been a force, averaging 8.1 rebounds a game. Tyler Boone has been pulling down 5.9 rebounds per contest.

The Rockets have been one of the better shooting teams in the area, at 46.9 percent from the field. Outside the 3-point line, Crittenden County has shot 32.3-percent. The Rockets come into the tournament averaging 26.3 rebounds a game.

Christian County comes into the tournament averaging 56 points a game, while giving up 57.6 points. Crittenden County is averaging 60.6 points, while giving up 62.1 points per game.

The two teams last met in the regional tournament in 2006, with Christian County picking up a 62-38 win in Madisonville.

Crittenden County has not won a game in Boys 2nd Region Tournament play since 1957, when they beat Trigg County 77-57. The Rockets would then lose to Hopkinsville in the semifinals.

Christian County’s last 2nd Region championship came in 2016, when they beat Hopkinsville 82-72 in the title game.
