The basketball world is mourning the loss of one of its great characters. TMZ.Com reported Thursday afternoon that long time Harlem Globetrotter Curly Neal passed away Thursday at the age of 77.

Neal spent 22 years with the Globetrotters, playing in more than 6,000 games. His #22 jersey was retired by the Globetrotters back in 2008.

Neal was known, not only for his talent, but his infectious smile and personality. He was also featured in several of the Globetrotters’ TV appearances.

He joined the Globetrotters after a collegiate career at Johnson C. Smith University, where he averaged 23 points per game.
