Sargeant Sisters Giving Back by Sewing Masks (w/VIDEO)

If this was a normal week, Sofia Sargeant would be at Disney World with the rest of her Heritage Christian Academy classmates on their senior trip. But this is far from a normal week.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the nation to a crawl in many ways. Heritage Christian, like most schools, has sent their students home to learn through non-traditional means and through technology.

But for Sofia and her younger sister Sarah, they are taking some of their time away from the NTI work to help the community.  With the help of their grandmother Laura Waldron, the Sargeant sisters are sewing protective masks to give to family members, including their grandparents, and people of need in the Hopkinsville community.

For the sisters, they not only get to learn a new craft and spend time with their grandmother, they are also helping the community.

The sisters’ aunt Donna Pfeufer has already been making masks for people on the front line of the virus in Hopkinsville.  She gave her nieces the pattern to follow in her footsteps.  Alissa Sanderson donated the material and elastic bands, and grandmother Laura offered her sewing expertise.

Sofia was a cheerleader at HCA and was looking forward to spending her spring going to prom and supporting the Warrior baseball team.  Sarah is a sophomore and played volleyball for HCA in addition to cheering.  Both sisters say they miss seeing their friends on a daily basis but understand the seriousness of the nation’s climate right now.

While Sofia talks of the uncertainty of her senior season, she knows she will be attending Murray State University in the fall and studying agriculture.

But for now, she and her family are doing their part to bridge the gap by giving back to the community.
