Caldwell County High School alum Fonso White has received Coach of the Year honors after leading his Fort Wayne Bishop Luers basketball squad to the Summit Athletic Conference championship this season.

It was Bishop Luers’ first conference championship since 2012.

OutsidetheHuddle.com has chosen White as the conference Coach of the Year.

The website notes: “The SAC had three different teams claim titles of some sort this season, but Luers won the big one that needed longevity. The Knights also rose to the occasion when they were picked to finish between 6th and 9th by every media outlet. To get there, they had to step up without a traditional ‘star player,’ integrate a lead senior who didn’t play a season before due to injury and had a coach who is still — in his second season locally — is trying to figure out the ebb and flow in Fort Wayne. Luers stepped up, won when they had to and finished marquee games in the SAC that they were rarely, if ever, were predicted to win.”

Bishop Luers won just five games total over the previous two seasons, but the Knights went 15-7 this year in White’s second season on the job.

Luers won the SAC championship, but got a tough draw in the Indiana sectionals and lost in the opening round of the postseason to Leo on March 4.

The Knights were 4-18 in the 2018-19 season after winning just one game the previous year.

White is a 1993 Caldwell County grad and a former member of the Tiger basketball team.
