Merritt to Continue Wrestling at Central Michigan

Christian County’s Jakerion Merritt, a 2019 state wrestling champion, has committed to Central Michigan University to continue his academic and athletic career.

Merritt is a three-time region champion and placed in the top five at state three times.  He finished fourth at state in the 132-pound class as a sophomore and returned in the class as a junior to claim the state title.

In February of this year, Merritt was ranked No. 1 in the 145-pound class all season before he was upset at the state tournament where he rebounded for a third place finish.

In his high school career, Merritt posted an 11-1 region tournament record and an 18-5 record in the state tournament.

Merritt is the fourth member of Christian County’s 2020 state runner-up team that will continue their wrestling career in college joining Niko Bussell at Lindsey Wilson and Cameron Coleman and Neal Aldridge at Thomas More.

Central Michigan finished second in the 2020 Mid-American Conference Tournament and qualified six wrestlers for nationals.
