After winning the 2nd Region’s “Female Athlete of the Year” award, this one should come as no big surprise to sports fans across the area. Webster County High School announced Wednesday that Marissa Austin had been named the school’s “Female Athlete of the Year.”

Austin was a multi-sport standout at Webster County. She played soccer, basketball, and was set to play both tennis and softball before the spring 2020 seasons were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Austin played in all 18 soccer matches for the Lady Trojans in the fall. She scored 26 goals and assisted on 9 others for a Webster County team that finished the season at 10-8, falling to University Heights in the opening round of the 2nd Region tournament.

She was also a member of the Lady Trojan basketball team. For the 2019-2020 season, Austin averaged 22.0 points per contest. Austin averaged an amazing 6.6 made three pointers per game over the course of the year. She added 4.5 rebounds per game.

Austin was among those expected to contend for a berth in the 2020 girls’ state tennis tournament. Austin reached the tourney last year, and won her first round match before being eliminated by Caldwell County’s Belle Englebright in the 2nd round.

Austin was also on the roster for the Webster County softball team for the 2020 season.
