Caldwell County High School is now in the market for new baseball and softball head coaches.

David Choate has stepped down from the Lady Tiger softball post, just a week and a half after Bradley Stallins resigned as Tiger baseball coach.

Choate announced his resignation on Wednesday. Choate was technically head coach of the Lady Tigers for two seasons — 2019 and 2020. However, he handled many of the on-field head coaching responsibilities from 2016-18 as first assistant coach under Lori Young.

In Choate’s five years as a coach at Caldwell, the Lady Tigers went 70-49. Of course, the 2020 season was wiped out by the COVID-19 crisis.

The Lady Tigers advanced to the 2nd Region championship game in 2018. It was Caldwell’s first appearance in the regional softball final since 2002. The Lady Tigers and the Christian County Lady Colonels played an epic championship game two years ago before a two-run home run by Christian’s Tyler Shemwell ended the contest, giving the Lady Colonels a 5-3 victory in nine innings.

Caldwell won the 2nd Region All A Classic for the first time in 2018 as well, outscoring Livingston Central, Crittenden County and Dawson Springs by a combined 51-0 in the regional tourney.

The Lady Tigers would not get to the defend their All A title the next season, however. Caldwell just missed the cut among the smallest 120 schools in the state and was not able to play in the All A Classic in 2019.

Choate’s daughter, Madi, was one of three seniors on the Lady Tiger softball team this spring. Two of those will play college softball — Choate at Asbury University and Karlie Rennison at Centre College.
