Prospects 16U Fall in Championship Game of Battle of the Bluegrass

It was a very solid performance this week for the Kentucky Prospects 16U team. The squad went 5-1 for the week, reaching the championship game of the Battle of the Bluegrass 16U & 17U in Lexington.

In their opening game of the event on Thursday, the Kentucky Prospects 16U used a four run third inning to take a 6-2 lead on their way to a 6-4 win over the Lexington War Eagles.

Lyon County’s Gunnar Bingham went 2-4, with a triple and a run scored. Lyon County teammates Brody Williams and Jackson Shoulders were both 2-3 with an RBI. Shoulders added a double and scored a run. Hopkinsville’s Jacob Dilday ended up 1-2, with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.

The Prospects 16U returned to action Friday morning. They took an early 4-0 lead only to fall behind 7-6 going into the final inning. The Prospects rallied for 6 runs to pick up the 12-7 win. Caldwell County’s Tate VanHooser led the effort, going 2-4, with a double, 4 RBIs, and two runs scored. Jackson Shoulders also ended up 2-4, with a double, 4 RBIs, and a run scored. Brody Williams finished 2-3 with an RBI. Jacob Dilday was 1-2, with a walk and a run scored.

Gunnar Bingham pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits, striking out three. Jacob Dilday pitched the final inning, giving up no runs, on no hits, and striking out one.

Saturday saw the Prospects 16U pick up a pair of wins. In the opener, the Prospects again used a 7th inning rally, this time scoring a pair of runs to take the 5-4 win over KBC 17U Prime. Jacob Dilday was among the hitting leaders, going 2-3, with a walk, and an RBI. Tate VanHooser ended up 1-4, with a double and a run scored. Gunnar Bingham ended up 1-4, with a double and a run scored.

On the mound, Jackson Shoulders went five innings, giving up four runs on six hits, striking out one and walking two. Jacob Dilday pitched the final inning, giving up no runs, on no hits, while striking out one.

Later Saturday, the Prospects 16U took a 5-0 lead, lost the lead, before scoring the final six runs of the game to pick up an 11-5 win over MidAmerica Prospects 17U. Brody Williams had a huge game for the Prospects, going 2-3, with 5 RBIs and a run scored. Gunnar Bingham finished 2-4. Tate VanHooser was 1-2, with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

VanHooser pitched the final inning of the game, giving up no runs, on no hits, and striking out two.

The Prospects 16U returned to action Sunday morning. They took an early 7-0 lead and then held on for a 9-7 win over Huntington Hounds 17U. Another big game for Gunnar Bingham, who went 3-4, with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Tate VanHooser finished 2-4, with a double, 2 RBIs, and a run scored. Jacob Dilday only finished with one official at-bat, but made the most of his time at the plate, driving in three runs, while scoring one more.

The Prospects 16U finished their weekend, facing a shutdown pitching performance, as they were limited to just two hits in a 6-0 loss to KBC West 17U. Gunnar Bingham had one of the two hits in the game.

Tate VanHooser had a solid effort on the mound, going 5 1/3-innings, giving up two runs, only one of them earned, striking out three, and walking three.
