Murray High senior Mary Browder Howell shot a personal-best 2-under 70 Saturday to win the Ballard Memorial Invitational.  She played in a group with McCracken County’s Madison Glisson and Lyon County’s Cathryn Brown.

Cathryn lost her brother Cullan to bone cancer on Aug. 4, and Saturday was her first tournament since his death.  If there is a high school player than can relate to the Browns, it’s Howell.

As a 10-year-old, Howell was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  She was fortunate that she didn’t have to receive radiation and has been cancer-free for six years, allowing her to shine for the Lady Tiger golf team.

Howell and the rest of the Lady Tiger golf team have an embroidered tribute to Cathryn and her family on their uniforms.  After Saturday’s win, Howell talked about her personal-best round and why it was important to honor a fellow competitor and her family.
