With some key graduation losses after the 2019 season, some may have thought the University Heights Academy Lady Blazers could be in a position to give up their throne as 8th District champions in 2020. However, Tuesday evening, the queens gave strong indication it will take a big effort to remove their crowns on the volleyball court.

In the season opener for both teams, the UHA Lady Blazers opened fast and ran to a straight set win over Hopkinsville in an 8th District battle at Blazer Gym.

The opening set of the match was all Lady Blazers. UHA rolled through the first, taking the set by a score of 25-7.

The second set saw UHA jump out to an early 7-2 lead. Hopkinsville battled back to tie things up at 19-19. However, the Lady Blazers closed out the set with the final six points to win 25-19 and go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, much like the second, University Heights would get out to the lead, only to see Hopkinsville battle back. The Lady Tigers would get as close as 18-17 coming down the stretch, only to see the Lady Blazers score 7 of the final 10 points to win the set 25-20 and take the match three sets to none.

Beth Peebles had a big night setting things up for the Lady Blazers. She finished the match with 13 assists. Allison Bullen the UHA in digs with 8. Julia Thomas paced the attack at the net with five kills.

The veteran trio of Hailey Hallmark, Alyssa Bearns, and Lauren Watkins paced the effort for Hopkinsville.

The Lady Blazers are set to return to action Monday night at home against Madisonville-North Hopkins. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to return to the court Monday night at home against Webster County.
