Whatever coaches want, Allen Dailey will do and this year it might be catching more passes

He was not a four- or five-star receiver coming out of high school but Allen Dailey still had 80 catches for 1,441 yards and 23 touchdowns in a perfect 15-0 season his senior year. His 23 touchdown catches tied for second in Alabama high school single-game history and his 1,441 receiving yards ranked among the top 10 in state history.

Yet in two years at Kentucky despite playing in 26 games he has NINE total catches for 113 yards and ONE touchdown.

Yet Dailey is not complaining. He mainly played special teams in 2018 and last year the passing game went away when starting quarterback Terry Wilson and backup Sawyer Smith both suffered injuries.

“We (receivers) just go hard. Whatever Coach calls, we run it to our best,” Dailey said. “Last year we had to take a role blocking every week. Now Terry is back and we have a lot of quarterbacks here. Terry is looking real, real good. Looking fast, throwing the ball on time.”

He also likes freshman quarterback Beau Allen.

“He is really good. Got a really good arm on him. Really slinging it around,” Dailey said.

Dailey says having to practice against UK’s talented secondary has helped him get ready for what he hopes could be a breakout season for him.

“We have some very physical defensive backs and the speed they have prepares us for what we will see later on in the season,” Dailey said.

Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran appreciates what Dailey has done and hopes is going to do this year.

“Biggest thing for him is toughness. He knows the offense,” Gran said. “Coach stoops and I were talking about him the other day. He is physical. There are a lot of things we can do in this offense that he will be really good at.

“He has been solid and doing everything right. He has some balls he will catch and be good. He brings that lunch pail mentality to that (receiving) group.”
