Moving up the depth chart is the main goal redshirt freshman receiver DeMarcus Harris going into his season. Apparently he’s done a good job of that because offensive coordinator Eddie Gran says Harris has been good enough that he has to play starting Saturday when UK opens the season at Auburn.

“I think I am coming along pretty well. I am trying to move up on the depth chart, show the coaches what I can do and be a starter,” Harris said.

He was ranked as a top 150 receiver nationally after catching 73 passes for 1,582 yards and 16 scores as a senior in Florida. He says no one in Florida “gives me a hard time” for picking UK and has been supportive of his decision.

“I dedicated myself to the weight room and learning the playbook for next year (during his redshirt season when he played in three games),” Harris said. “I was patient and knew my time was coming. The coaches had faith in me the whole time.

“I think I have one of, if not the best, best hands in the receiving room. Probably my speed, I run a good 4.4 in the 40, is also my biggest asset.”

Harris says he is a better blocker after his work in the weight room and can “crack” a linebacker or safety more easily now.

“We have to compete. Nothing is given to you. If you were a starter last year that does not mean you start this year,” Harris said. “It is about competing. You have got to put it on film. Film doesn’t lie.”
