PREVIEW – Region 2 Boys’ Golf Tournament a Wide-Open Affair

The Boys’ Region 2 Golf Tournament appears to be a wide-open affair as the teams tee off Monday at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.

Daviess County is the two-time defending champions and is the only region team to qualify for the All-State championship last weekend in Lexington.

Two-time region champion Daniel Love has graduated from the Panther squad, leaving the individual title up for grabs.  Nick Johnson has been the top golfer for Daviess most of the year, but Grant Broughton has been right on his heels.

Hopkinsville has the tournament on its home course after a third-place finish at the region tourney last year.

James Folz won the Hopkinsville Invitational earlier this year at the country club by one shot over Owensboro Catholic’s Jakob Wellman.  Evan Pyle can give the Tigers a boost Monday with some added motivation. The junior missed qualifying for state last year by a single shot.

Folz will be looking to become the first Hoptown golfer to win the region title since Austin Knight took the 2015 title in a playoff.  Hoptown’s last region team championship was in 2014.

Wellman leads an Owensboro Catholic team looking to regain the region trophy for the first time in three years.

Reece Higdon and Griffen Payne both had top-10 finishes at the Hopkinsville Invitational in addition to Wellman, helping the Aces edge Daviess County by six shots and Hopkinsville by seven.

Only the region champion qualifies for next week’s state tournament in Bowling Green.  The seven lowest scores not on the first place team also qualify for state.

Madisonville junior Jackson Hill may be playing the best golf of anyone in the region.  He finished fourth at last week’s All-State Tournament and took medalist honors in a four-team match at the country club the next day.  He will be looking to return to the state tournament for a fourth straight year.

University Heights Academy senior Jiles Wyatt will be looking to advance to Bowling Green for a second straight year.  He finished fourth at region last year.

Christian County will field a young team at region with Micah Smith looking for a low score to qualify in what could be his final match as a Colonel, while seventh-grader Landon Hunt, who has led the team at several events this year, will be playing in his first region tourney.

Webster County’s Grant Puckett and Hopkins County Central’s Kaleb Adams both finished in the top 10 at the Hopkinsville Invitational, while Dawson Springs’ Gage Smiley won the All-A Classic region tourney at the country club.

Fort Campbell will be fielding a young team with several golfers making their first region tourney debut.

Breckinridge County and Muhlenberg County also finished in the top ten on the course in August.
