Webster’s Grant Puckett Survives Rain, Wind to Claim Region Golf Title

Despite a rainy and windy start to his day, Webster County’s Grant Puckett remained steady, knocked down some big putts, and won the Region 2 Golf Tournament Monday at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.

Puckett’s score of 4-over-75 was two shots better than Breckinridge County’s Lincoln Smith and Madisonville’s Andrew Munger.  Puckett shot a 36 on the front nine during off-and-on ran showers and a 39 on the back nine when the rain stopped but windy and overcast conditions prevailed.

Smith led Breckinridge County to the region title by three shots over Hopkinsville.

Puckett and Munger both qualified for the state tournament.  So did Madisonville’s Jackson Hill, who shot a 79.  Muhlenberg County’s Nolan Nofsinger and Owensboro Catholic’s Jakob Wellman both shot an 80 to also advance to state.

Owensboro Catholic’s Reece Higdon, Muhlenberg County’s James Soderling, and Webster County’s Grant Turner each shot an 81 and will return to Hopkinsville Tuesday morning for a playoff to determine which two golfers advance to state.   Playing conditions were too dark to have the playoff at the conclusion of Monday’s round.
