Jay Nimmo Wins Second Straight State Golf Title

The only shot Jay Nimmo saw on his final hole at the state golf tournament was the final one.  It was a par putt on the first playoff hole that gave him the 2020 state title.

The Marshall County senior and Cooper High’s Rylan Wotherspoon were tied at 3-under par after 36 holes.  After a brief discussion, the two golfers were sent back to the 18th tee for playoff hole well after sunset.  The gallery didn’t see any of the shots the golfers made until Nimmo made a short putt for par and let out an exclamation yell after realizing he won.

Nimmo was the round one leader after shooting 4-under par Tuesday.  He had four birdies and four bogeys on the front nine.  After a double bogey on No. 11, Nimmo finished at 1-under over the final seven holes.  He missed a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18 that would have given him the win outright.

Nimmo, who has committed to play golf at Mississippi State, is only the third golfer since 1957 to win consecutive state golf titles and the first since West Jessamine’s Fred Allen Meyer in 2012-13.  The other is fellow Region One golfer Case Cochran of St. Mary in 2005-06.
