A year after falling to Lyon County in the 5th-District title game after beating the Lady Lyons in both regular-season meetings, the Trigg County girls’ soccer team returned the favor Thursday night, knocking off the Lady Lyons 2-0 after being shut out in both previous matches.

The Lady Wildcats got all the offense they needed in the first half, handing the Lady Lyons only their third shutout loss of the year.  Lyon County played without leading scorer Leah Schroeder after she injured her knee over the weekend, and struggled to replace what she brings to the Lady Lyon offense.

Lyon County was looking for its third-straight district title, but instead, Trigg brings home the trophy for the first time since 2017.  Both teams advance to next week’s 2nd Region tournament and will find out who they will face at the draw on Friday morning.

The Lady Wildcats were on the front foot from the first whistle, and the pressure paid off with just over ten minutes played.  Kara Southwood got behind the right side of the Lyon County defense and found DeDe Barbee in front of the net to finish from close range.

Trigg employed Paige Kelly as a deep sweeper, and the Lady Lyons found it difficult to get a good look at goal.  With three minutes left in the half, Trigg doubled the advantage after Barbee again scored, this time with help from Lania Hite.

The Lady Lyons grew into the game in the second half but still found scoring opportunities scarce.  The best chance came on a free-kick from the top of the Trigg 18-yard box with twenty-five minutes left, but Rose Smith’s shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Sarah Sink had a fairly easy night in goal to claim Trigg’s third shutout of the season, while Maddie Russell kept the Lady Lyons in it with 15 saves at the other end.

Trigg County enters next week’s regional tournament on a five-game winning run, outscoring the opposition 28-3 during that span.  Lyon County drops its third in five outings and will face one of the other three district winners in the first round.
