Well-Oiled Purples Spoil Christian County Senior Night

Playing its home opener in mid-October and just third contest of the season, Christian County High School looked like a football team lacking game reps. The difference against a well-oiled Bowling Green squad that has played nearly double the amount of games was stark at Stadium of Champions, as the Purples rolled to a 42-0 district defeat and spoiled Senior Night for the Colonels, who honored 22 veterans in a pre-game ceremony.

County, which dropped to 1-2 on the season, fell into a quick hole after Javeius Bunton bullied in for a pair of one-yard touchdown runs in the first six minutes. Ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, BGHS (4-1) actually used a trio of TDs at the goal-line in the first half to build a 28-0 halftime lead.

Eli Burwash scored the Purples’ third touchdown on a one-yard dive with 6:28 left in the second quarter, and later used a 40-yard fake punt keeper to set up a seven-yard run by Bowling Green quarterback Conner Cooper late in the third period.

Burwash’s TD run was set up by an interception and 22-yard return by 278-pound Bowling Green defensive lineman Jeremiah Lightfoot, who was finally drug down just short of the end zone.

Cooper accounted for three touchdowns in the victory, including two through the air. He found Tyler Strode from 7 yards out just before the midway point, then triggered a running clock when he found University of Kentucky recruit Jordan Dingle for a 23-yard score with 7:53 remaining in the contest.

Christian County QB Donta Abren was on the run most of the night. The senior dual-threat speedster mixed a slew of designed draws and impressive broken-play recoveries to rack up nearly 85 yards on the ground. JaSean Riley and L’Ray Coleman were Abren’s favorite targets Friday, but their presence wasn’t enough to stave off a relentless Purple defense that had allowed just 28 points coming into the game.

Bowling Green, coached by Hopkinsville native Mark Spader, earned its second shutout of the year. In five games, Bunton has rushed for 11 TDs and nearly 1,000 rushing yards. Friday’s TD grab was the first of the year for Dingle, who has 20 catches in 2020.

The road gets no easier for Christian County, which plays next at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at South Warren. It will be the Class 5A, District 2 regular season finale for the Colonels. The Spartans (4-0) defeated Greenwood 37-13 on Oct. 16 to remain unbeaten.
