University Heights Academy overcame a slow start to hand Lyon County 7-0 set back in the quarterfinals of the Second Region Soccer Tournament Tuesday at the Stadium of Champions.

The contest was originally scheduled to be played in M-adisonville Monday, but heavy rain and lightning forced it to be postponed to Tuesday and moved to Hopkinsville.

Lyon County kept the Blazers off the scoreboard until the 21st minute when Preston Thomas sent a crossing pass high into the middle, and it found its way into the corner of the net. The Blazers asserted control of the match eight minutes later when they scored four goals in a seven-minute span.

Elvin Wagner redirected a corner kick into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute. William Bryan, who became the school’s all-time leading scorer last week, scored the next two goals for the Blazers. The first was a nifty unassisted goal that saw him weave between two defenders before sneaking it past Lyon County goalie Cole Schroeder. His second goal in the 34th minute came off an assist from Ethan Hale.

Bryan then fed Connor Dill for the Blazers’ fifth goal of the half with four minutes remaining until intermission. Bryan completed his hat trick early in the second half to give University Heights a 6-0 lead.

Matthew Hauret rounded out the scoring when he rebounded a missed shot by Ethan Alexander and poked at home in the 65th minute.

University Heights Academy outshot Lyon County 21-6 in the match. Schroeder made 10 saves in his final match in goal for the Lyons.  Quinton Quarles and the Blazer defense recorded their seventh shutout of the season.  Quarles made five saves in goal.

Lyon County, who was looking for its first region tournament win in 14 years, sees its season end with a record of 4-9-1.

University Heights Academy moves into Wednesday’s semifinals where they will play Madisonville, who beat Webster County 10-0 in the other quarterfinal.

The Wednesday semifinal contest will be played at 8 o’clock in Madisonville and follow the other semifinal match between Henderson County and Hopkins County Central.
