Austin Cavanaugh continues to etch his name in the Trigg County cross country record book and added a regional cross country title to his resume Saturday.

The sophomore won the Class 2A Region I meet held at Calloway County, becoming the first Trigg runner to win a 2A region title and the first Wildcat runner since Frank Boone in 1987 to win a region title in any class.

Cavanaugh’s finish helped the Wildcats finish second as a team and qualify for next week’s state cross country meet in Paris.

Cavanaugh broke early and led wire to wire, finishing 34 seconds ahead of second-place Trevor Baker of Webster County in a time of 17:00.

Timmy Cannon, who also played on Trigg County’s soccer team, finished 11th in a time of 18:51.  River Oliver led a strong Wildcat pack with a 13th place finish, one spot ahead of teammate Riley Thompson. Marshall Jenkins finished 17th to round out the Wildcat scoring.

Nathan Potts finished 27th and Ryan Simpson was 32nd.

Webster County won the race with 28 points. Ryan Roland, the three-time defending region champion, finished 10th for the Trojans in his first race of the season. The senior has battled a bout of mono that’s kept him from his normal training routine.

Trigg had 56 points, and Calloway County was third with 69 points.

The Class 2A State Meet will be held Friday afternoon at the Bourbon County Park.
