Buoyed by a pair of personal bests, including another school record by Chase Atkins, the Hopkinsville cross country team finished sixth Saturday at the Class 3A Region I Meet at Muhlenberg County.

The finish qualifies the Tigers for the state meet in Class 3A for the first time. They last ran at state in 2012 while competing in Class 2A where they finished 18th.

Atkins ran a 15:25 to beat his own school record time of 15:36 set two weeks ago in Owensboro.  The Hopkinsville senior finished 11 seconds behind region winner Jackson Watts of Madisonville.

Sophomore Quinn Miller ran a personal best time of 17:38 to finish in 20th place. Chance Jones finished in 32nd place in 18:13 over the 3.1-mile course. Ross Binkley was 40th and Jonathan Bridges was 65th to round out the Hopkinsville scoring.

The Tigers were sixth with 159 points. Daviess County had four runners in the top 10 and took the championship with 40 points.

Hopkinsville will run in the Class 3A State Meet next Saturday in Paris.
