Caldwell County has swept the 2nd Region volleyball awards for top player and top coach for the second straight year.

And it’s the same recipients as last season.

Caldwell senior Olivia Mitchell has been named the regional Player of the Year while Lady Tiger head coach Daniel Cortner is the Coach of the Year.

The awards are presented by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association.

Caldwell won its 14th straight district championship last week, sweeping three sets from Madisonville-North Hopkins in the title match.

The Lady Tigers, now 16-5, host Henderson County in a first round match in the 2nd Region tournament Monday night.

Mitchell leads Caldwell with 370 kills this season and has over 1,800 career kills. She also recently passed 1,000 career digs.

It is the ninth time a Lady Tiger has been named 2nd Region Player of the Year by the KVCA.

Besides Mitchell, other Caldwell County players honored were Mandy Gray (2007), Emily Meeks (2009), Casey Stone (2010), Jessie Stone (2011 and 2012), Katie Van Hooser (2016) and Carlie Peek (2017).

It is the eighth time Caldwell County has had Coach of the Year.

Former Lady Tiger skipper Sue Stone won the award five times — 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014.

Cortner has now claimed the honor three times. He was also named Coach of the Year in 2016.

Meanwhile, Ballard Memorial swept the 1st Region awards. Isabella Myers was named Player of the Year while Adam Solomon took Coach of the Year honors.

The Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 13th-annual Region Players and Region Coaches of the Year on Monday.

Selections were voted on by KVCA member coaches.
