Monday was a huge day for the Caldwell County volleyball program.

Not only were Olivia Mitchell and Daniel Cortner named the 2nd Region Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, the Lady Tigers also ended Henderson County’s five-year reign as 2nd Region champion.

Mitchell, the 2nd Region Player of the Year the last two seasons, had 22 kills and five digs Monday night as the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Colonels in straight sets, 25-12, 25-22, 25-19, at the CAB gym in Princeton.

Not only had Henderson won the last five regional titles, but the Lady Colonels had eliminated Caldwell along the way each of the past five years.

Henderson had also beaten the Lady Tigers in three sets back on Oct. 6 in Princeton.

But Caldwell was able to use that loss as motivation to end Henderson’s run in the regional tournament.

Caldwell jumped out to early leads in each set in Monday’s first round matchup.

The Lady Tigers led 6-0 and 14-3 on the way to a relatively easy first-set triumph.
Down 8-3 and 14-6, Henderson battled back to within 23-22 in the second set. But the Lady Tigers won the next two points on a tip by Mitchell and then a big hit by Mitchell to take the set.

The Lady Colonels overcame a 5-0 deficit to come back to tie the third set 9-9. But Henderson could never get the lead as Caldwell pulled ahead to finish off the match.

Abby Griggs had 12 kills, two block and three digs in the Caldwell win while Kendyll Prowell had 36 set assists, two kills and four digs.

Riley Thomas had a team-high 23 digs. Mary Tays recorded five kills, nine digs and four aces.

Caldwell also got four kills from Savannah Scott and five digs from Adi Sullenger.

Henderson entered the regional tourney as the 6th District runner-up to Webster County after forfeiting the district championship match last week because of COVID-19. Caldwell, the 7th District champion, then drew Henderson in the first round matchup.

The Lady Tigers will next face Crittenden County. The Lady Rockets are 12-10 after defeating Christian County in straight sets Monday in Marion, 25-20, 25-15, 25-21.

Caldwell has beaten Crittenden twice already this season and leads the all-time series with the Lady Rockets 29-2.

The semifinals will be played at Christian County on Tuesday. Caldwell and Crittenden will play at 5:30. The late match has Madisonville-North Hopkins and Webster County.

The 2nd Region championship match is set for 6:00 Wednesday, also at Christian County.

Caldwell is seeking its first regional title since 2011.
