Former Caldwell Baseball, Basketball Coach Sammy Jones Dies

A former Caldwell County High School basketball and baseball head coach has died.

Harold C. “Sammy” Jones, 80, died on Thursday.

Besides being a former coach at Caldwell County, Jones was also a teacher, athletic director and vice principal in the Caldwell County School System for 27 years.

Jones was an assistant coach on Caldwell County’s only 2nd Region championship basketball team in the 1963-64 season.

He took over as head coach from George Perry the following year and was head coach of the Tigers from 1964-65 through the 1968-69 season. Caldwell went 17-12 in the 1967-68 season and reached the regional semifinals.

Jones spent 10 years as head coach of the Caldwell baseball team from 1965-74. His 1967 squad was 10-2 while the 1968 team went 13-3. His final Tiger baseball team in 1974 finished 15-2.

A former Tiger player, Jones was also a former broadcaster of Caldwell County ballgames on WPKY Radio.

According to Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton, private services will be held at a later date. Burial will take place in Rosedale Cemetery in Dawson Springs.
