Greg Buckner has found a new home in the NBA with the University Heights Academy alum set to join the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach.

Cleveland.com reported Tuesday that Buckner will join the staff of J.B. Bickerstaff, whom Buckner worked with in Memphis for three seasons.  Buckner spent the past summer coaching an AAU basketball team that included local players as well as Greg’s son Ace and nephew Andre Buckner II.

The report said Cleveland had an open spot on the bench after Bickerstaff was promoted to head coach to replace John Beilein.  Bickerstaff was 5-6 following his promotion.

Buckner was an All-State player at University Heights Academy before leading Clemson in scoring each of his four seasons at the ACC school.

He was drafted in the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft and played 10 seasons with five teams.

His NBA coaching stops have included Houston and Memphis.
