Young and lean would be the words you could use to describe the University Heights Academy Lady Blazers as the start of the 2021 season approaches. After graduating a huge senior class in the spring, the Lady Blazers find themselves with just seven varsity players and one senior heading into the season.

Coach Derrick Hickman returns for his second season at the helm of the UHA girls’ program.

Gone are multi-year players Lily Hendricks, Meghan Adams, Clarissa Millers, Mallory Rager, and Aniah Dailey. Roughly 80 percent of the Lady Blazers scoring last season has departed the program. With that much offense gone, some of the young Lady Blazers on this year’s roster will have their chance to shine in the COVID delayed 2021 season.

Expected to lead the way for University Heights is 8th grader Alecia Davis. Davis saw action in 21 games last season for the Lady Blazers, averaging 3.6 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest. Davis will spend much of her time running the point for UHA.

Junior Brianna Daniel will look to provide some offensive firepower. Daniel connected on 19 3-pointers during the 2019-2020 season, and averaged 3.5 points per game. Daniel likes to hang out behind the arc, as she only made one shot from inside the line last season.

Brittyn Northington returns to the court after seeing action in only four games last season. Northington will look to provide some inside strength for the Lady Blazers and will need to be a force on the glass this season for a team short on numbers and size.

Look for 8th grader Aliviah Acree and sophomore Amaryia Bass to see significantly increased roles for UHA as the season gets going.

With few numbers, injuries and foul problems are two things that the Lady Blazers can ill afford this season.

UHA faces a schedule that will find some very tough tests for a young squad. In addition to their district matchups against Hopkinsvillle and Christian County, the Lady Blazers will also square off against the likes of Hopkins Central, Trigg County, Crittenden County, Madisonville, Lyon County, Russellville, and Todd Central.

Coach Hickman spoke with YourSportsEdge.Com and took a look ahead at the 2021 season.
