Crittenden County sophomore Taylor Guess has picked up right where she left off last season. After leading the Lady Rockets in scoring during the 2019-2020 season, Guess hit for 24 points Tuesday night as Crittenden County picked up a 54-41 5th District road win at Lyon County Tuesday evening.

Guess, who averaged 17.8 points per game as a freshman had a balanced night, scoring 12 points in the first half and 12 more in the second half to lead the Lady Rockets to the win.

Early on in the contest, Guess and Lyon County’s Calista Collins went toe-to-toe. Guess had seven points in the opening quarter, while Collins had six, as Crittenden County took a 13-6 lead after the first eight minutes. In a foretelling of what the evening would be like, the Lady Lyons got a bunch of great looks at the basket early, but could not get the ball to go through the net. Lyon County shot 3-10 from the field in the first quarter.

Using defensive pressure and a strong rebounding effort, the Lady Lyons would battle back in the second quarter. A basket from Ella Defew cut the lead down to 19-17 late in the quarter. However, Crittenden County would finish the half on a 9-1 run to take a 28-18 halftime lead. The run was keyed by the play of Taylor Guess and Natalie Boone.

From that point, it was an uphill battle for the Lady Lyons. With Lyon County’s shooting woes continuing in the second half, the lead would get no smaller than seven points for the rest of the game.

The Crittenden County lead would be at seven points going into the final quarter at 37-30. The lead would still be at seven points at 46-39 with just over two minutes to go in the game. However, the Lady Rockets would use an 8-0 run to settle the issue on their way to the 54-41 win. Taylor Guess scored six points in the game sealing run.

Calista Collins led the Lyon County effort with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Hadlie Butler added 8 points. After a scoreless first half, Rose Smith finished the night with 7 points.

In addition to Taylor Guess’ 24 points, Crittenden County got 10 points each from Natalie Boone and Nahla Woodward.

Lyon County opens the season at 0-1, and will return to action Thursday night at home against Union County.

Crittenden County moves to 1-0 to start the season, and will be back on the court Thursday night at home in 5th District play against Livingston Central.
