Jabrion Spikes hit the first of two free throws with 2.7 seconds to provide the winning margin for Caldwell County Friday night at Crittenden County.

Spikes put the Tigers up 55-54, helping Caldwell end a five-game losing skid.

Crittenden (4-4) had one final chance, inbounding from in front of its own bench with 1.3 seconds left. But the Rockets couldn’t convert from the low block at the final horn, allowing Caldwell to get out of Marion with the one-point win.

Caldwell (3-7) trailed by six points early in the contest before using a 21-10 advantage in the second half to get to the break with a 35-26 lead.

The Tigers led by as much as 12 points on multiple occasions in the third period.

However, a pair of 3-pointers by Preston Morgesen and a 3 just ahead of the horn by Gabe Mott helped Crittenden close within 45-42 entering the fourth quarter.

The Rockets drew even late when Mott scored in the paint to knot the game at 54-54. Mott was fouled on the play, but could not covert the three-point trip, keeping the contest tied.

Caldwell ran the clock down to 5 seconds and called timeout. Spikes was then fouled on a drive to the basket at the 0:02.7 mark, setting up the winning point.

Spikes finished with 23 points to lead all scorers in the contest. Tripp Branch added 10 for the Tigers.

Mott tallied 21 points for the Rockets. Turley finished with 12 and Morgeson had 10.

Caldwell enjoyed a sizable advantage at the free throw line. The Tigers were 17 of 29 while the Rockets made six of 11 attempts at the stripe.

It was the second nail-biter in as many nights for Caldwell, which fell 61-60 in overtime to Webster County on Thursday.

Caldwell has taken nine of 10 meetings with the Rockets over the past five years, including a 49-47 decision earlier this season in the semifinals of the 2nd Region All A Classic in Eddyville.
