If Caldwell County’s girls needed any extra motivation for Friday night’s 7th District game against Hopkins County Central, they only had to look back six days.

The Lady Storm defeated the Lady Tigers 47-36 last Saturday in Mortons Gap.

But Caldwell was ready for the rematch, claiming a 53-40 decision at the CAB gym.

Jacey Jaggers’ double-double led the way, with the senior guard tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The victory was the third-straight this week for the Lady Tigers but, in the age of COVID, it doesn’t help them any in the district standings. Only the first game against each district opponent this season counts toward district seeding.

So Hopkins Central wrapped up the No. 1 seed with last weekend’s win over the Lady Tigers.

However, Caldwell has thrown its hat into the ring as a contender when the 7th District tournament is held in just over two weeks at the CAB gym.

The Lady Tigers led most of the way on Friday night, getting to halftime with a 26-20 edge and taking a 36-27 advantage to the fourth quarter.

Caldwell (6-8 overall, 2-1 district) led by as much as 12 early in the fourth quarter before Hopkins Central made a charge. The Lady Storm (5-7, 3-1) got as close as 42-36 with over 3 minutes to play.

But Majah Hollowell buried a key 3-pointer to stop the Hopkins Central momentum, and Caldwell responded with a 10-2 run. The gave the Lady Tigers their biggest lead at 52-38 late, virtually putting the game out of reach.

Jaggers moved up two more spots on Caldwell’s all-time scoring list with her big game. Now with 1,348 points,

Jaggers went from 10th to eighth, passing Jayme Davis and Jayme Jackson on the Lady Tiger list. Next up are Elizabeth Hobby (1,374 points) in seventh and Pepper Shinall (1,383) in sixth.

Hollowell added 11 points in the Caldwell win.

Hopkins Central was led by Brianna Fritz, who had 17 points, and Madison Grigg, who finished with 14.

One night earlier, Grigg broke the Lady Storm’s career record for steals with five in a setback against Henderson County, passing Lyric Campbell who had 377 steals.

Caldwell has another district game coming up Saturday at Madisonville-North Hopkins. That contest begins at 1 p.m.

Hopkins Central also plays again Saturday at 1:00, hosting Hopkinsville on Senior Day.
