Looking to put the brakes on a 5-game skid, the Hopkinsville girls’ basketball team instead ran into a surging Owensboro squad on Tuesday night in Tiger Gym, falling 65-52 to the Lady Devils.

The Lady Tigers slip to 1-6 with Caldwell County scheduled to make the trip to Hopkinsville on Thursday.  Owensboro wins its sixth in seven tries to move above .500 at 10-9.

Both teams started slowly, with Owensboro leading 4-0 early on.  Shaterrea Bellamy scored on a layup to pull the Lady Tigers to within a bucket at 6-4, and they trailed 9-7 after Faith Dansbury connected on a 3-pointer from the corner with :52 to play in the first.

Hoptown’s Donisha Flowers scored in the paint to start the second and tie the game at 9-9, but they still trailed 17-14 after Dansbury’s second 3-pointer just over two minutes into the quarter.

Owensboro’s Alyrica Hughes was a thorn in the Lady Tigers’ side all night, and she twice came up with steals and layups in the final minute of the half to give the Lady Devils a 30-20 cushion at the break.

The margin hovered around 10 for most of the third quarter, before 5-straight points from Krystell Papas and a pair of free throws by Lyric Lawrence gave the Lady Devils a 53-31 lead.  After scoring 9 points in the second quarter, Flowers posted 7 more in the third, but the Lady Tigers trailed by 18 with a quarter to play.

Down 20 with under two minutes to play, the Lady Tigers began to chip away at the lead.  Flowers scored 5-straight, and LaTaijha Cherry scored down low to slice the difference to 13, but Hoptown’s comeback bid ran out of time.

The Lady Devils made the most of their trips to the free-throw line, finishing 18/23, while the Lady Tigers let themselves down with an 8/20 performance.

Flowers finished with 23 to lead all scorers, but she was the lone Lady Tiger in double figures.

The Lady Devils used a balanced attack, with Pappas and Lawrence finishing with 16 each, Hughes posting 15, and Alicia Phillips finishing with 12.
