Kentucky signee Martez Thrower does one thing that stands out to UK linebacker coach Jon Sumrall, a player known for his intensity when he played for the Wildcats.

“The most impressive thing about Martez is he just plays football with physicality. He just tries to punish you when he hits you,” said Sumrall.

The Kentucky assistant coach is friends with Rob Stowe, Thrower’s coach at Wilcox County High School in Rochelle, Ga.

“Every three games or so last season he was sending me pictures of a face mask Martez had bent or broken,” Sumrall said. “He loves contact. He is kind of an old-school player.

“He also played running back but maybe my favorite highlight of him is kicking off. The kickoff was not real impressive but he makes the tackle and just knocks the stew out of the kid who catches the kick.”

The 6-2, 215-pound Thrower had 120 tackles, including 92 solo stops and 9.5 tackles for loss, his senior season. He picked UK over Arkansas, Mississippi State, Michigan State, Tennessee and others.

“Martez is in his own right a very talented young man and is a very physical player,” Sumrall said. “Martez strikes people with bad intentions.”

Combine him with Trevin Wallace, another freshman linebacker signee from Georgia, and Sumrall is excited about what they are going to add when they get to campus in June.

“Sometimes you have to temper your enthusiasm because they are going to be freshmen. And there are a lot of growing pains that come along with being a freshman,” Sumrall said. “But excited about both those guys. They’re eager to get here and I think they both have very bright futures.

“Martez is a great kid and a really good player. I have high expectations for him and just think he is another kid who is going to do big things for us.”
