He’s not as highly rated as the three players who verbally committed to Kentucky over the weekend but landing Cincinnati tight end Josh Kattus is still a significant addition to the 2022 recruiting class.

First, he’s the first tight end in the recruiting class, and both head coach Mark Stoops and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow like to have at least one tight end in each signing class.

Second, Kattus continues the Ohio pipeline that has been so good for Kentucky football since Stoops’ arrival in Lexington.

Third, Kattus’ father, Eric Kattus, was a tight end at Michigan in the mid-1980s where he caught eight touchdown passes from current Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. His father also was drafted by the Bengals and played in the NFL. Yet he did not pick Cincinnati, his other finalist, or Michigan, one of 20 other offers he had. He was also apparently the top tight end target for Louisville, which does not have any commitments in its 2022 recruiting class.

Kattus continued a recent trend with future Cats by announcing his commitment Tuesday on Kentucky Sports Radio. The 6-4, 240-pound Kattus is a three-star prospect but he was apparently the top tight end recruiting target for Kentucky.

Two other Cincinnati Moeller players — tight end Branden Bates and cornerback Carrington Valentine — are already on the Kentucky roster and Kattus admitted he leaned on Bates for input during his recruitment. He also said former UK tight end C.J. Conrad, a current UK grad assistant, also had a big influence on his decision to pick Kentucky.

Kattus had 23 catches for 288 yards and four touchdowns in eight games last season.

Kattus’ commitment only adds to UK’s impressive recruiting class. He joins offensive tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin of Indiana, linebacker Keaten Wade and quarterback Destin Wade of Tennessee; offensive tackle Grant Bingham of Johnson Central, receiver/defensive back Treyveon Longmire of Corbin, athlete Jeremiah Caldwell of Michigan, cornerback Andrew Stewart of Georgia and kicker Jackson Smith of Boyle County.
