Winning the national championship was “awesome” for Kentucky senior Gabby Curry and her teammates. However, she said on Sunday Morning Sports on WLAP Sunday that the welcome-home celebration at Memorial Coliseum was “absolutely thrilling” to her and her teammates.

“I tell people winning the national championship was awesome but coming back to Lexington and meeting and seeing all those people was great,” she said. “I was having dinner one night with friends and somebody came up and said, ‘I was in Milwaukee and we were all watching (the national championship match) and we love volleyball.’

“To me, that is amazing. I don’t think there is a better feeling.”

It’s not just Kentucky fans that were happy to see the Wildcats win the school’s first volleyball national championship. Curry is from Atlanta and knows players at various SEC schools that were just as happy to see an SEC team finally win a national championship.

“We’ve had a bunch of people reach out saying, ‘Thank God somebody beat Texas and it was a SEC school,'” Curry said. “Everybody was on the same page wanting more respect for the level of play in the SEC.

“SEC volleyball does not get the respect the Big Ten does. It has just been overlooked. It was so nice for us all to get a lot of support from everyone, including other players, for winning the national championship.”
