Liam Coen enjoyed his time on the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff and knew his knowledge of football went from “what I thought I knew to what I know now” and says it took a “huge bump” up. So why did he leave the NFL to become offensive coordinator at Kentucky?

“It was the SEC,” Coen said during the “Kentucky Spring Football All-Access” special on the SEC Network. “I wasn’t going to leave the highest level of football for anything less than the SEC. It’s the next best thing (to the NFL).

“It took a special place, a place where I saw the ability to improve. I want to have an impact on kids’ lives in the program. I think this was a great opportunity to be around good people.”

Coen said Kentucky coach Mark Stoops left “no grey area” in his conversations about the UK job.

“It was all straight up exactly like it was supposed to be and a direct reflection on how he runs the program,” Coen said.

Coen said one simple statement that future recruits had to like.

“This place (the UK football facility) triumphs the LA Rams facility,” Coen said. “Not even close.”

The new UK offensive coordinator says UK players are as “close as they can get to the National Football League playing in the SEC” at Kentucky.

However, Coen was also blunt in how the UK offense has to change.

“These guys knew they needed to get better. You just can’t throw for 110 yards (per game) the last two years. That’s not good enough,” Coen said.

No, it’s not and that’s why Stoops needed an NFL-minded offensive coordinator like Coen.
