Yates Brothers Pace Logan County In Six-Inning Win Over Colonels

Logan County batted around in the first inning, leading to a six-run explosion, en route to a 14-4 home baseball win Monday over Christian County. Zach Yates kept a stronghold on his team lead in season RBIs (29), driving in four runs to lead the Cougars to their fifth straight victory overall.

The Colonels made a little headway in the third inning when Preston Phan and Houston George drew consecutive, two-out RBI walks with the bases loaded, cutting Logan’s lead to 6-2, but CCHS would get no closer and dropped its sixth straight contest as a result.

After LCHS leadoff hitter Davin Yates singled to start the bottom half of the first, his brother, Zach, brought him home with an RBI single to put the Cougars on the board. Then, following a pair of ensuing walks from Cols starter Elijah Underhill, and a run-scoring error on Christian County, Jaxon Hendrix delivered a big blow in the form of a two-out, two-run single to right, giving Logan a 5-0 advantage.

Underhill (1-6) lasted two innings in the loss. He struck out three, walked three, and surrendered five hits. Only 6 of the Cougars’ 14 runs were earned, thanks to four Colonel errors. Phan (1 inning) and David Krzywada (2 2/3 innings) finished the six-inning, run-shortened contest in relief.

Macon Barrow (2-3) gave up just one of Christian County’s two hits in his second win on the mound this season. Barrow only last 3 2/3 innings after he walked eight batters, but his seven strikeouts — including the side in the second inning — were helpful in securing the decision. Hendrix and Keaton Slaughter combined for the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit, one run and one walk.

Zach Yates (2-for-3, walk, four RBIs) ended the game via mercy rule with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. He was joined by Davin Yates (2-for-5, three runs), Wyatt Blake (0-for-3, walk, three runs, three stolen bases), and Barrow (3-for-5) with big nights on offense.

The Colonels were led in defeat by Underhill, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk atop the CCHS order. Underhill has hit all three Christian County homers this season. George and Joshua Snorton each drew two walks, while George Forrest added the other hit for his squad.

Christian County (3-14) will try to end its slide when it hosts Hopkinsville in a district tilt May 13. The Cols fell to Hoptown 7-0 on April 15 in their first meeting of the year.
