Hoptown Drops Games With Lyon, Owensboro Catholic

As the two top-rated teams in the 2nd Region, Hopkinsville and Lyon County figure to meet somewhere in the postseason.

But Saturday was Lyon’s day, as the homestanding Lyons blanked the Tigers 9-0 at Jim Boyd Field in Eddyville.

It was the first of two games for Hopkinsville, which later lost to 3rd Region front-runner Owensboro Catholic 3-1.

Lyon’s Austin Long struck out 11 while pitching a complete-game shutout in the opener.
Preston Chaudoin was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Tigers.

Brody Williams got the Lyons started on the right foot with a two-run home run to center in the bottom of the first inning.

Lyon (18-4) stretched its lead to 5-0 with three runs in the fifth.

The Lyons then put the game away in the sixth. One run scored on an error, then Brady

Darnall slammed a three-run homer to left field to extend the margin to 9-0.

In Hoptown’s second game, Chaudoin’s solo home run in the top of the third inning gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

But Owensboro Catholic scored twice in the bottom of the third and once in the fifth to claim the 3-1 triumph.

Hayden Ward was the winning pitcher for the Aces. He went the distance on the mound, allowing just the one run on six base hits while striking out 11.

Hopkinsville actually outhit Owensboro Catholic 6-5.

Zach Moss was 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Tigers’ offense.

Sam McFarland was 2-for-3 and drove in all three runs for the Aces (22-3).

Hopkinsville, now 14-7, is scheduled to visit Webster County on Monday.
