A strong day from middle-distance runner Allison Wood helped to carry the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers to an 8th place finish at the Class 3A Region 1 track and field championship at Marshall County High School Wednesday.

Wood set a school record in the 1600-meter run, outkicking Madisonville’s Joy Alexander in the final 100 yards to finish with a time of 5:30.75.  Alexander was second, 1.02 seconds back.

Wood’s time beat the old mark of 5:31.56 set by Meghan Easton in 2018.

Wood finished third in the 3200-meter run in a time of 12:22.11.  Ainsley Taylor, of Daviess County, took first place with a time of 12:08.68.

Lori Moyd had the Lady Tigers’ other top-5 finish with a third-place effort in the girls’ shot put. Moyd had a throw of 31-feet, 10-inches. Ashby Greenwell, of Henderson County, won the event with a toss of 36-feet, two inches. Amari Sanders, of Apollo, finished second. Moyd added a 7th place finish in the discus to her effort.

Tara Ladd had top-1o finishes for the Lady Tigers in the girls’ 100-meter and 200-meter runs.  She was sixth at 100-meters and ninth at 200 meters with her times a season-best in both events.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for next month’s state meet at the University of Kentucky.  The next 10 statewide not in their region’s top two will also qualify meaning the entry list won’t be known until the final Class 3A region meet is held.

In the team competition, the Lady Tigers were in 8th place with a total of 23 points. Marshall County took 1st place, while Henderson County finished in second place.
