Tough Draws for Regional Tennis Players at State

There are some tough draws for the tennis players out of the region headed to the state tennis tournament Tuesday. The event gets underway with matches at both the University of Kentucky and the Top Seed Tennis Club.

In boys singles play, which will get started at the Top Seed Tennis Club, Fort Campbell’s Andrew Haughenberry, who was the runner-up at the regional tournament, will play at 8 am Tuesday morning against Addicus Hughes, from Community Christian.

University Heights’ Ethan Alexander, who reached the regional semifinals, is scheduled to take on the overall #9 seed Peter Laskey, of Highlands. That match is scheduled for a 9 am start.

In boys’ doubles, regional champs Jordan and Ryan Hammett, of Caldwell County, will begin play at 10:00 am. They will take on 8th graders Equan Branham and Joseph Honeycutt, of Knott County Central.

Hopkinsville’s pairing of James Folz and Spencer Powell, despite being a regional runner-up, got the absolute toughest matchup they could get. Folz and Powell will open up against the overall #1 boys’ doubles seed, Ty Bush and Patrick Johnson, from St. Xavier, at 10 am.

Caldwell County’s Grayden Miller and Billy Wallace are set to open play at 12pm Tuesday. They will take on Andrew Kruse and Kameron Mullins from Bullitt East.

On the girls’ side, with matches being played at the University of Kentucky, in single’s play, regional champion Victoria Lopez Rodriguez, will open play against the overall #9 seed Lydia Prince, of East Jessamine. That match is set for 9:15 am.

Regional runner-up Sophie Maddux, of Hopkinsville, was handed a tough draw. Maddux will open against the overall #5 seed Lilah Shallcross, of North Oldham, with the match set to start at 9:00 am.

In doubles action, regional champs Allie Fort and Ella Lester, of Hopkinsville, will start play at 12:00pm Tuesday. They will take on Madison Fugate and Mallory Miller, from Letcher County Central.

Hopkinsville’s Grasen Givens and Ella Brown, who reached the regional semifinals, will play at 10:30 am. They are set to take on Sofia Allen and Elise Henderson, of Scott High School.

First-round winners would also play their second-round matches on Tuesday. The tennis championships are set to run through Thursday in Lexington.
